Wood Lathe Duplicator for Wood Turning
A wood lathe duplicator is an attachment for a wood lathe that allows the lathe to duplicate a wooden piece that has already been constructed. In some duplicators you can create templates from lexan plastic or other materials which can be used in lieu of a prototype piece.
Lathe turning can be a rewarding experience. It also can be most frustrating–especially for the new or inexperienced woodworker. That’s because Many projects require several matching pieces-such as four table legs, matching lamps or a set of salad bowls–and it usually takes quite a bit of practice to develop the skills that are necessary to turn out matching pieces by conventional methods.
The duplicator reads the dimensions of the first piece or template and carves them into the wood of the other piece. Duplicate parts such as chess sets, baby crib spindles, table legs, bedposts and other similar items are all things that could benefit from the use of a wood lathe duplicator.
The Lathe Duplicator saves a lot of time in duplicating a shape without having to re-measure to get them all exactly the same by hand. Product users do not have to worry about their pieces being unmatched. Parts will look uniform when a duplicator is used and will cost less.
Before there were duplicators, pieces all had to be machined by hand. It was extremely hard to get pieces to match exactly. The duplicator allows exact pieces to be constructed much more quickly. However, skill is still required to operate the machine and to construct the first piece.
The lathe duplicator makes it possible for anyone to turn as many duplicate pieces as they need after only a few short practice sessions. In addition, the duplicator allows you to enjoy the lathe and create freehand turnings without having to learn how to hold, use or sharpen ordinary lathe chisels.
Instead of using ordinary chisels, the duplicator has cutters which are mounted securely to a separate tool rest assembly. A follower with the same profile is installed. By guiding the follower along a template or pattern, the cutter will duplicate the profile in the workpiece.

How to Get Started in Wood Turning
Woodturning also involves much more than simply choosing a lathe.
There are hundreds of tools and accessories available. Do your research and buy wisely and you should be able to get started with the correct tools for your needs at a reasonable cost.
- Consider whether or not you will enjoy turning enough to justify the monetary investment
- Learn as much as possible before spending your money.
- Take a turning class or attend a club meeting – The American Association of Woodturners sponsors local clubs in nearly every region of the country.
- Perhaps you can find a wood turner in your area that can advise and help you.
There are two basic categories of wood turning.
- Spindle Turning – Spindle turning generally involves turning a cylindrical object usually turned “between centers”
- Face Plate/Chuck Turning - This category involves using a face plate or chuck to mount your blank directly to the headstock spindle
- Common spindle projects include pens/pencils, candlesticks, bottle stoppers, table legs, balusters, wands, telephone poles, knitting needles, finials, pedestals, Christmas ornaments, etc.
- Common face plate / chuck projects include bowls, hollow forms, urns, vases, platters, wall hangings, goblets, etc.
The cost of the lathe itself is only part of the picture. With a little research you can know in advance what other items are required.
A top-of-the-line lathe with all the attachments and highest quality tools will not make you a professional turner, or even a good one.. It simply makes you another turner with a nice lathe. What you produce with the tool is up to you.
